The VF-1D Valkyrie is a two-seat trainer variant of the VF-1 series, equipped with a dual cockpit for both a pilot and a co-pilot or instructor. It is primarily used for training new pilots, but can also serve in combat when necessary. The VF-1D features a distinctive elongated cockpit canopy and a head unit with two offset laser cannons. In Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Hikaru Ichijyo first flies the VF-1D during his introduction to variable fighter combat, often alongside Lynn Minmay as a passenger.
